Here's a little more advanced method of doing it, but still mostly with filters so it's nice and easy to do:

Find yourself some nice reddish brown colours and filter/render/clouds.

Image

Duplicate the layer, opacity - 20% mode - Normal, and then do filter/artistic/sponge (0,0,1). Merge the two layers.

Image

Now goto filter/distort/shear and make a pattern of your choice. When this is done, goto filter/distort/wave (keep all of the default settings except for "no. of generators, which should be roughly set at around 200). Finally run a few burn (midtones mode) dodges (highlights mode) through it.

Image

Now, we want to grain it up a little - New layer, opacity - 10%, mode - Darken, and fill it it with either of your brown colours you started with. Then goto filter/noise/noise (12.5%, gaussian, monochromatic) and finally then filter/sharpen/unsharp mask (default settings).

Image

For more detail to our grain, were going to randomise it a little. New layer, opacity - 25%, mode - darken, and draw a few straight lines into your piece with small brushes (3px, 5px, 9px). Now filter/distort/shear, and filter/distort/wave as you did earlier with the base.

Image

For a little more detail, create a new layer in darken mode again (this time maybe up to 50% opacity, I think I used 30) and draw some lines like the previous step and filter/distort/shear it. Scale and arrange it to fit your grain as you please. Then goto filter/noise/noise and apply the settings we used earlier. Finally goto filter/blur/motion blur (angle 0, distance 10 ).

When this is done you should have something that looks like this:
Image

Thats all im telling you; the key is to experiment and see what you like and what you don't. This is what I made with this texture afterwards as an example:

Now make your own versions, bitches!

default meaning unchanged, all you need to do is press ok

good tutorial.
i feel with making wood that the pattern is most important, you gotta make it seem as natural as possible, and not so generated and wispy. while keepning the grains well defined
