The Lair will be going down soon for maintenance. Due to a very very Bad Thing[tm] which happened during a server update the machine has been crippled to the point I cannot fix it remotely.

I cannot give a good estimate for downtime yet, because I don't know how bad the situation really is. In worst case the server will require a complete reinstallation (again), which could take the better part of a week or more.

For now the gameservers are still running (heck I couldn't even stop them if I wanted to :p) and will remain doing so until the gameservers crash or we bring the system down.

Well it seems the gameservers have expired. It's now a matter of getting the server in so I can reconfigure the machine.

Yeah there was a Steam Update today I believe, that auto update probably knocked it over?

Well, to be honest it's a new oportunity to review the configuration of the lair. Between now and the last time I got to fix the lair I've learned quite a bit more about a lot of things.

Also, the lair will be featuring an up-to-date kernel, GNU C Libraries and scripting engines (Perl/PHP) and will most likely have the game server configured more effectively.

So what build of linux etc are you going to be putting on.

And can you make it VAC protected (gameserver)?

AFAIK, the Lair servers are already VAC and HLGuard protected.

Most likely I will put on Slackware, although I am starting to consider other distros such as SuSE (I am starting to fall in love with YaST2). The Kernel will be either a 2.4.x or a 2.6.x, depending on several variables. The rest of the services will simply be whatever is new, stable and secure.

As far as the Lair is concerned; it was already running in secure mode.

Nice.

What about Fedora or Mandrake? (The only ones I've used, ofc ;))

I know both distros and I am not very enthusiastic about either of them. Mandrake is too much a desktop oriented distro for dummies and fedora has been giving me too much crap at the company I am working at right now.

I like Slackware because it's the one Linux distro that is closest to BSD/Unix. SuSE's nice, esp its YaST tool and the way it organizes it's services, but it has some drawbacks.

Gref, I have two hdds, and I'm running Apache Service on WIndowsXP, but I really want to run a dual boot *nix OS on my other HDD... which one would you recommend?

If you want 'easy & flexible' I'd say SuSE. If you want to get hardcore, very stable, almost BSD/Unix like, get SlackWare. If you will have no linsux (j/k) choose any flavor of BSD. ;)

Especially if you want to run a GUI from the Linux distribution I recommend SuSE. You can set it up with Slackware but it's a pain to set up manually.
