So, what benefits does Linux have over Windows? What would I gain from using it?

Yep, you would.

Linux is:

1) Hackers god (most would use knoppix tho) or
2) Good for servers

Windows is:

1) Good for 'home' use (word processing etc.)
2) Gaming

And keep in mind. Gaming on linux is close to IMPOSSIBLE. However hacking (for talk sake, i ain't recommending you take it up ;)) and running servers is not something very many ppl do.

Oh ok, just curious. My brother bought a copy of linux 4 i think about 4 years ago and it was a waste of money to him because he was hoping to use it as a replacement for windows. Well, thanks for setting me straight guys.

Nah it is set out for a completely separate purpose. Also you can legally acquire linux for free. He should never have had to pay for it.

If you pay for Linux you get better tech support and installation help, waste of money.

When you 'pay for linux', you in general pay for the CD's, manual and customer support. I paid for my Slackware 7.1 (4) CDs and got a neat little book with it (also available online, but not as pretty ;)) and support. On the whole I only paid as much as I would have for the book I reckon.

Things like KDE with their emulation programs could be a viable replacement for windows some day.

(possible rant alert)

Read this: 'In the beginning was the command line'

Ok, so I didn't write it. Then again, it does get you thinking.

"Why do I pay a lot of money for ones and zeroes which obscure the way a computer works?"

"Why do I consolidate myself to one single OS?"

"Why isn't the world acknowleging the benefit of a free OS?"

Well, whatever... Just read it. Linux gets you in trouble and will cost you quie a bit of tine snd effort, but it does learn you a lot of stuff about the computer in general.
